The art of Seki – an on-going project between the Gifu Prefecture & atelier oï

The Gifu Prefecture proudly reveals its outstanding traditional craftsmanship focusing on cutlery handcraft. The art of Seki offers a unique experience based on senses and cultural contrasts. CASA GIFU II ephemerally relocates this region of Japan into the heart of the Brera District. The fusion of the Swiss design studio atelier oï and the Japanese manufacturers are metamorphosed by scenographic installations and objects.

Through partnership, the focus is this time set on another part of the oasis of craft and industrial know-how in the Gifu Prefecture, a city called Seki. Co-working with one of the oldest forges of the region, atelier oï developed a katana, thus synthesizing the exchange of talents and artistic expertise for the central piece of the exhibition.

Showcasing ancient and contemporary metal instruments from SekiCASA GIFU II houses a close-up on materials and long-term manufacturers. Associated with the cutlery art work, the paper-making tradition will also be explored through an impressive and mobile installation.

The exhibition offers a new way to look at the history of man-made and rethink ancestral knowledge in order to cultivate cultural and local design.

Recently, in addition to paper itself, the company has begun manufacturing creative products with excellent designs in order to meet the needs of the time. MOLZA has also been developing a new market in cosmetics, such as free cut face paper, oil blotting paper with a faint fragrance of green tea, a new type of deodorant paper, smartphone cleaners, and nail polishing sheets.

Since its foundation in 1891, as a Gifu specialty lantern maker, OZEKI has expanded its market both in Japan and overseas. Based on our business performance and distinctive techniques, our products have been highly acclaimed, which is evidenced by over a hundred awards won at various domestic and international exhibitions. For its achievements, the company was granted the Blue Ribbon Medal (Ranju hosho) in 1931 and the Fifth Class Order of the Sacred Treasure in 1943. We are devoted to developing new products, which has led to several dozens of patents, utility models, and design registrations. We deliver our Gifu lanterns (traditional Bon festival lanterns) to department stores nationwide, as well as exporting the Isamu Noguchi “AKARI” products to the US and European countries. We are always seeking for new opportunities. This is the Ozeki’s will that has been inherited across the generations.
